Prosthetics with implants is the installation of an artificial orthopedic structure that replaces one or more teeth. Such a prosthesis very realistically imitates real teeth and is almost invisible to others. The main difference from other methods is the support of the structure on artificial titanium roots implanted in the jaw bone tissue. They are called implants (in some sources you can also find the form “tooth implant”).
Dental implantation has a number of advantages, of which any competing technique has only a part.
Minimal injury. When installing implants, it is not required to grind and use adjacent healthy teeth as supports, and prostheses do not harm the gums. Physiological. The patient quickly gets used to the prostheses and ceases to notice them.
Aesthetics. Dentures are similar to natural teeth and have no visible attachments.
Reliable fixation. The design withstands full chewing loads without the risk of detachment. Preservation of bone volume. After the loss of a tooth, the bone gradually atrophies: the loss is 40–60% in the first three years and continues thereafter. Thanks to implants, chewing loads on the jaw area are resumed, and the atrophic process stops.
Long service life. A tooth implant can be used without replacement for 10 or even more years. Simple care. The rules of oral hygiene are the same as for natural teeth.
Dental implants are posts surgically placed into the upper or lower jawbone. They replace one or more teeth that are next to each other. Implants are an effective way to replace missing natural teeth. When teeth are lost because of disease or an accident, dental implants may be a good option. You may want to choose dental implants if:
you hide your smile because you have missing teeth
your dentures are not comfortable
you are not happy with your removable partial dentures
you do not have or do not want your other teeth to anchor a bridge restoration
People may choose implants to replace a single tooth, more than one tooth, or to support a full set of dentures.
Dental implants are made of titanium (a strong, lightweight metal) and other materials. Millions of implants are placed by dentists every year in the United States, which makes them a very common and popular option for replacing teeth.
